Subject: 8mm Vintage Camera iPhone App Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:52 pm
I recently purchased an app for my iPhone 3GS called "8mm Vintage Camera". This app replicates what 8mm footage would appear to be if digitized. I was interested when I first saw the app come up on the App store, but it had only a few reviews and no free versions to give it a trial run. So I decided to hold out. This week it was featured as the "App of the Week" on the Apple App Store. I decided to invest the $1.99 because it had nothing but great reviews and no major complaints.
I HIGHLY suggest this app for any video producer looking to add 8mm footage to his/her repetiteur. The footage looks incredibly reaslistic, unlike third party editor filters. There are five lens filters, five effect filters, and a "frame jitter" feature that allows you to roll the footage as if a projector reel is having problems playing. I did not use all the filters and effects, but each clip uses two seperate filters/effects. In clip one I used lens filter #1, with effect filter XPro effect filter. Clip two was shot with lens filter #3, with the 70S effect filter. In both clips I used the frame jitter effect.
I also took the footage, that is originally shot in 640x480 on my iPhone 3GS, and up-converted it in a full size 1920x1080 project, exported it to 720p, and amazingly lost very little quality in the process, even when in 1080 resolution. The video below features the footage I shot.

The awesome fact about this app, is it's incredibly easy to use while still remaining to look legitimately realistic. This app also illiminates the need for an 8mm camera, projector, and white wall/screen. This also vito's the need to waste precious tapes for your camera in order to capture the footage to your computer. All you need to do is shoot the footage, plug your Apple device into a computer, and copy it over. It's that simple. And takes only a fraction of the time/price to produce.
In all, I rate this app . It is affordable, super useful, and very easy to use.

It looks neat! Is 8mm footage the same thing as Super 8? I know that there were some comments on that in the Catalyst teaser.

Yeah, same format.

True. I noticed that too. It won't work if you upgrade the OS?! I'm running a 3GS with iPhone4 OS. I know for a fact that Apple has an upgrade available somewhere that allows you to upgrade 3GS to 4, but I'm unsure if that will work with the 3G. Might want to look into that. I think I remember my AT&T store manager telling me it costs like $15 bucks.

Here's another clip, although it's dark, it's just another sample. I didn't up it to HD. Just directly uploaded from my iPhone.
